Dr. Sung Yong CHO, a graduate of Seoul National University College of Medicine (SNUCM), has specialized in urology, focusing on treating conditions such as urinary stones, benign prostatic hyperplasia, strictures, and upper tract urothelial carcinoma at Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) in South Korea since 2019.
Within SNUH, Dr. Cho leads key departments, including the Specialized Endoluminal Endourology-Stone (SEES) Center, the Therapeutic Ultrasound Lab (EASYURO) for urolithiasis and prostate diseases, and the Center for Medical Device Development Research, which includes the Usability Test Center within ICMIT (the Institute for Convergence Medicine and Innovative Technology; previously, this function was part of SIMTRI, the SNUH Innovative Medical Technology Research Institute). He has served as the president of the Korean Society of Medical Devices Usability (KoSMeDU) since 2023.
He is a leading expert in Korea and East Asia in endoscopic surgery for kidney stones and enlarged prostates. His specialties include flexible ureteroscopy (f-URS), robot-assisted f-URS, supine and miniaturized percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), and Endoscopic Combined IntraRenal Surgery (ECIRS). He is also highly skilled in robot-assisted reconstruction surgery for strictures. In the field of prostate treatment, he excels in performing Anatomical Endoscopic Enucleation of the Prostate (AEEP) using Holmium Laser (HoLEP) and bipolar electrodes (BipoLEP/TUEB).
In 2019, he represented Korea in the Asian Guidelines of Urolithiasis Panels and shared his expertise through papers and live surgeries at international conferences. He is an active international committee member of the Endourological Society, Société Internationale d'Urologie, and Urological Association of Asia. Additionally, he founded the Asian Urological Society of Endoluminal surgery & Technology (AUSET, www.endoluminal.org) and the Endoluminal Technology Symposium (ETS). AUSET became the official section for Asian Endourology of UAA in September 2024. He has been one of the board members of the Korean Society of Medical Robotics since 2025.
