Consultant Urologist
Surrey & Sussex NHS Trust, United Kingdom
Mr Shahid Khan is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Surrey & Sussex NHS Trust, based at East Surrey Hospital. His specialist interests include minimally invasive and robotic urological surgery, renal cancer, and complex stone disease.
He was part of the pioneering team that established the CMR Versius® robotic surgical platform at East Surrey Hospital in 2021 — the Trust’s first robotic programme and one of the earliest multi-specialty Versius installations in the NHS. This initiative, which now supports urology, upper GI, colorectal and gynaecology surgery, reflects his commitment to innovation, collaboration, and equitable access to advanced surgical care.
Mr Khan’s clinical practice encompasses a broad range of urological procedures, including robotic and laparoscopic nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy, and percutaneous stone surgery. He also leads the Trust’s lithotripsy service and has played a key role in developing pathways for minimally invasive management of kidney stones and renal tumours.
He contributes actively to governance, training, and audit within the Trust and has presented nationally and internationally on robotic surgery outcomes and implementation frameworks. His ongoing research interests include comparative outcomes between robotic and laparoscopic surgery and the integration of digital technologies in urological practice.
Aligned with the NHS England & GIRFT Robotics Framework (2025), Mr Khan is dedicated to promoting safe, evidence-based adoption of robotic surgery, supporting training and proctoring of new users, and helping to advance minimally invasive surgical standards across the NHS.
