Juan Luis Vásquez, MD, PhD, Assoc. Prof.
Venezuelan-born urologist, academic, and clinical leader, currently serving as Chief Consultant and Head of the Urothelial Cancer Team and Research at Zealand University Hospital and Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen.
He earned his medical degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in 2006 and relocated to Denmark to pursue advanced clinical and academic training. In 2014, he completed a PhD at the University of Copenhagen with a focus on electrochemotherapy for bladder cancer, a field in which he remains an innovator—holding a patent for a novel electrode system designed for bladder tumor treatment.
Vásquez became a certified urologist in 2019 and quickly rose to leadership, contributing over 24 peer-reviewed publications and guiding multiple PhD projects focused on bladder cancer treatment, electroporation, and microbiome influences. His research has secured more than €1,000,000 in grant funding. His reasearch is focused on more patient-friendly and cost-efficient treatments of baldder tumors, such as laser technologies, but also the develoment of Calcium Electroporation as a treatment modality.
He holds or has held several high-profile positions in European urology: Chair of the EAU Section of Endourology (Bladder), Chair of the EAU Young Urologists Office, and member of the EAU Board. He previously served on the boards of the European Board of Urology, the Danish Medicines Council, and chaired the European Society for Residents in Urology.
A seasoned speaker and mentor, Vásquez has delivered over 65 invited lectures internationally and organized more than 70 scientific meetings. He is the founder of the award-winning EAU Talent Incubator Programme, recognized for advancing equity and leadership in urology.
