Mr. Bhavan Rai is a Consultant Urological Surgeon with a specialist interest in robotic surgery and urological oncology at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, United Kingdom. His primary practice is prostate and upper tract urothelial cancers. He is currently the chairman of the uro-oncology multidisciplinary meeting at the Freeman Hospital. He is the lead for the Royal College of Surgeons of England accredited Fellowship program in Robotic surgery at the Freeman Hospital. He is an elected executive member of the Section of Oncology of the British Association of Urological Surgeons.
He has published extensively on urological research and has over 150 peer-reviewed articles. He has an MSc Research degree, evaluating the role of urinary biomarker MCM-2 as a diagnostic tool for bladder cancer. His current research interests include outcomes research and systematic reviews in uro-oncology, surgical education, and artificial intelligence. He has also been a sub-investigator for several regional and national trials. He is currently the Principal investigator in 2 NIHR trials evaluating various aspects of metastatic Prostate cancer management (ATLANTA and IP5-Matter). His recent publications include Cochrane reviews comparing Robotic and Open Radical cystectomies and evaluating long-term survival outcomes in patients undergoing Nephroureterectomies.
Mr. Bhavan Rai is passionate about training in urology. He has been a faculty member in international laparoscopic courses for prostatectomy and nephrectomy, and national courses such as Boot Camp. He is a Hand-on-Trainer (HoT) in the EUREP course. He is the course director of the annual cadaveric course in robotic surgery, and trans-perineal biopsy at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, UK.
