Dr. Francisco Martins is a consultant urologist in the Department of Urology, University of Lisbon, Faculty of Medicine, Hospital Santa Maria, in Lisbon, Portugal.
His main areas of clinical and research interest are genito-urethral, pelvic trauma and reconstruction, vesicovaginal and rectovaginal fistula, female pelvic medicine, erectile dysfunction, urinary diversion and neurourolgy.
Dr. Martins obtained his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon and completed his Urology Residency at Hospital Pulido Valente in Lisbon. He then completed a one-year post-doctoral fellowship in Erectile Dysfunction, Neuro-Urology and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, under the mentorship of Drs. Donald Skinner and Stuart Boyd. He subsequently earned his Specialist title in Urology from the Portuguese Medical Association, College of Urology. He visited several Urology Departments in Europe and USA associated with Residency Exchange Programs and Postgraduate Training. He has been engaged in several humanitarian outreach clinical visits in Ethiopia, Angola and Tanzania.
Dr. Martins is president-elect of the Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons (GURS) board of directors and is a member of several national and international societies and associations. He is a peer-reviewer for several journals including Acta Urológica Portuguesa, Actas Urológicas Españolas, Advances in Urology, European Urology, International Urology and Nephrology, Journal of Men’s Health, Journal of Urology, among others.
He has presented and lectured at numerous national and international meetings, edited 5 books, and co-authored > 70 articles and 16 book chapters.
He is Honorary Member of the South African Urological Association and of the Hungarian Urological Association. He is also a Honorary Member of the Philippines Reconstructive Urology Society.
He received the 2023 F Brantley Scott Award at the AUA Annual Meeting in San Antonio in 2024.
